Our students may have diagnosed learning differences such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, or an auditory and/or language processing disorder. Our students may also be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit disorder. Some students do not have a diagnosis of a learning difference, but see success from the benefits of our intentionally student-centered environment, welcoming school culture, and active teaching approaches that incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Our Student Support Plans are living documents put into place to assist a diverse range of academic and social needs. Furthermore, all students at our school receive executive function support embedded in our classroom practices to build independence and advocacy skills. These include organization, planning, and study skills provided within our instructional program.
We support autistic students who can thrive in a supportive college- and career-prep academic program. Our community provides holistic support to each student in a calm, structured learning environment tailored to their diverse needs.
Support at Wye River Upper School is woven throughout the school day. Students benefit from small classes, tailored instruction, executive functioning support, regular check-ins with teachers, and dedicated support blocks throughout the week. Our goal is to help students build confidence, independence, and the skills they need to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
Yes! We develop our Student Support Plans using information from IEPs, 504 Plans, psychological testing, and school records. This process ensures that all learning needs and accommodations are available to teachers, parents, and students. Students are encouraged to embrace their accommodations and utilize them effectively to enhance their learning.
No, diagnostic testing is not required to apply. If your student has prior testing, such as a Psychoeducational Evaluation, we use those results as a guide to better understand their strengths and needs and to help shape the right level of support. If your student hasn't been tested, that's not a barrier to applying. Contact our admissions office and we'll talk through your options together.
Our priority deadline for admission is February 1st, but we accept applications for all grades with available space throughout the year. Families interested in financial aid or transportation are especially encouraged to apply before February 1st, since both are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
