At Wye River Upper
School we write and present our curriculum to provide our students
the essential knowledge necessary to prepare them for the rigors
of post-secondary college and technical settings. We use the
core learning goals of the Maryland State Department of Education
as a general guideline for determining student outcomes. Highlights
of our well-rounded program include classic and contemporary
literature, rigorous and applied science and math coursework,
and a social studies curriculum that is relevant and engaging.
Our students come to understand their individual strengths and
styles, and may choose assessments that are best suited to their
strengths.
We keep student/teacher ratios low to ensure individual attention
and student accountability. In addition to required coursework
in core content areas, Wye River Upper School curriculum may
include:
- Bay Ecology – hands-on learning experience at Chesapeake
Bay Environmental Center.
- State-of-the-Art Technology – all students and
teachers use an Apple laptop.
- Classic and Contemporary Literature.
- Rigorous and Applied Science and Math.
- Digital Arts Program – photography, filmmaking,
music production.
- Music – fundamentals of music and music ensemble.
- Languages – Latin and Spanish.
- Direct Reading Instruction.
- Interscholastic Sports – lacrosse, soccer, basketball,
swimming.
- Community Internships.
Our curricular content is enhanced by an emphasis on a student’s
use of effective study skills and organization in both home
and school. We discreetly teach and reinforce these skills
and strategies throughout the year. We focus on improving
the writing process across all curricula as students write
to inform, persuade, narrate, and express.
Wye River Upper School instruction is often project-based,
using rubrics to support a student’s ability to organize
and plan their final work product. Applied learning opportunities
which focus on problem solving and team work are frequent
both inside and outside of the classroom. Remedial work may
be included in an individual student’s studies where
diagnostic information highlights skills deficits.
Successful completion of our program leads to a high school
diploma approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
