"Last year we went to Mississippi
to do post-Hurricane Katrina relief work. This is an
experience I will remember and treasure for the rest
of my life. It really hit home, the work we did, and
the people we met."
-- John Staurulakis, Student
We work to establish
and sustain community partnerships to create applied learning
experiences for our students. Our students serve their community
through their required service learning hours. They may serve
a non-profit of their choice or one which we supervise, including
our Leo Club, sponsored by the Kent Island Lion’s Club.
We are proud to say that graduates of Wye River Upper School
have discovered their passions for community service and gone
on to pursue them in their post-secondary training. Our partners
include:
Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center.
Chesapeake College Continuing Education.
Kent Island Lions Club.
Chesapeake Bay Trust.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Our students do a lot of volunteer work, both in Maryland
and farther afield. Some of Wye River Upper School’s
service learning opportunities include:
Establishing a Leo Club Chapter.
Volunteering at Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center.
Serving breakfast to veterans at the American Legion.
Producing an anti-smoking Public Service Announcement
targeted to teens for Maryland cable television.
Hurricane Katrina clean-up work in the Mississippi
Gulf area.
